Crochet a Cheeseburger - Handmade Pot Holders Tutorial

Free Pattern to Crochet a Set of "Cheeseburger" Potholders for Summertime Grilling, Fall Football Tailgating, or Anytime!

I love to crochet and enjoy sharing with fellow fiber art crafters. Here is a free pattern to create five unique potholders and/or sturdy hot pads that -- when stacked together -- look like a cheeseburger! Perfect for summertime grilling, for camp cookouts, or for tailgating at sporting events.

Dress up your kitchen or store in your camper for all your summertime cooking with these fool-the-eye pot holders! Put on your kitchen shelf next to your stove for a conversation piece all year round. Easy to crochet with these simple directions.

*All photographs of crocheted cheeseburger potholders on this page are the property of (c) Wednesday Elf.

Cheeseburger Potholders in Crochet

- A Novelty Item that is also Practical and Useful

Cheeseburger Potholders Set of Five
Set of Five Novelty Potholders

An easy pattern to crochet-for-the-kitchen (or patio). Each potholder is crocheted double-thick for extra protection. I used acrylic yarn for it's ease of handling and the fact that it is easily machine washable & dryable, but cotton yarn can also be used. This particular set I call a 'Cheeseburger' potholder can be varied with less or more pieces (leave off the cheese potholder and you have a 'hamburger' or add a green round potholder for 'lettuce'). The set shown here consists of five pieces -- top and bottom buns, hamburger, cheese slice and tomato slice. All potholders except the cheese slice are done in single crochet in the round and are quite simple to do, so it becomes a good 'take-along' project for busy crafters.

*Each potholder begins with a Basic Round listed below, with variations for individual pieces described later down the page.

Materials:

  • Worsted-weight (4-ply) yarn: about 1-1/2 oz. beige or tan, 1 oz each of white, brown, yellow, orange and red.
  • G/6 Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle

Crochet Abbreviations Used in this Pattern

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
Rnd - round
sts - stitches

BASIC ROUND

NOTE: Bun top and bottom potholders, and Hamburger potholder are each made from this Basic Round. Make in brown for hamburger, in tan and white for bun.

  • Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12)
  • Rnd 3: (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. (18)

Cheese Slice Potholder

Cheese Slice for Crocheted Cheeseburger Potholder Set
Cheese Slice Potholder

Cheese Slice Potholder is a Square!

The cheese slice is worked around the starting chain, making the front and back at the same time, then closing the top with a row of single crochet.

NOTE: Since rounds have a tendency to veer to the right (or left, if you crochet left-handed like me), stop every few rounds and pull work to the left (right) until stitches seem to be straight up and down.
Instructions:

  • Rnd 1: With Yellow, ch 24, sc in 3rd chain from hook (turning chain counts as 1 sc), sc in next 20 ch, 3 sc in end ch, turn, working back side of chain, sc in next 21 ch, mark end of Rnd. (46 sc).
  • Rnds 2-24 (or until piece is square): Sc in each sc around.
  • Rnd 25: Holding both sides together, sc across top to close, fasten off.

Different Yellows for Different Cheeses...

Use a bright yellow yarn for your standard American cheese slice. If you want to get fancy, use a light yellow yarn for a different kind of cheese. In crochet, you can create anything you can imagine. :)

Tomato Slice Potholder

Tomato Slice Potholder for Crocheted Cheeseburger Potholder Set
Tomato Slice Potholder

The seed effect of the tomato slice is made by bringing the hook through from the wrong side and working sc (reverse sts) with 2 regular sc separating each seed section. Each round is increased 6 sc as in the Basic Round, with increases always worked in the reverse sts (seed section) after Rnd 3 is completed.

Tomato Slice Potholder Instructions with Seed Stitch
  • Rnd 1: With Red, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join rnds.
  • Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
  • Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, reverse sc in next st, repeat from * around (start of seed pattern).
  • Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 reverse sc in reverse sc, repeat from * around.
  • Rnds 5-10: From here on, sc in each sc, reverse sc in each reverse sc, increasing 1 reverse sc in each seed section, or 6 increases per round (60 sts at end of Rnd 10).
  • Rnds 11 & 12: Sc in each st., increase 6 sts each rnd.
  • Rnd 13: Working back loop only, sc in each sc around, cut yarn and fasten off.

To finish: Make two pieces and sew together through both loops of Rnd 13 on first piece and through back loop of Rnd 12 on second piece

MY PERSONAL NOTE: If you want to keep this pattern simple throughout and don't want to fuss with learning a new technique, just crochet the tomato slice in the Basic Round through Rnd 12.

Plush Turtles and a Tortoise - Plush Toy Animals

Two Turtles and a Tortoise

Turtles

Turtles are animals that walk slowly, have a shell on their back and can pull its head and its short legs into the shell.  Turtles live on the land or in the sea or other bodies of water. In England, a turtle is sometimes called a tortoise.

Turtles come in many sizes from the tiny speckled cape tortoise in South Africa which measures around 3 inches long, to the giant leatherback sea turtle which can grow up to 7 feet long.

Toy Turtles in Plush

Since children love turtles, and I create in crochet for kids, I wanted to make some plush toy turtles.  These cuddly stuffed turtles are soft and cute and love to live in a child's toy box or keep them company on their bed.  Currently, a couple of different sized plush turtles are waiting in my Etsy Shop, Coastal Crochet Crafts, until time for them to leave for their new home.

The Latest Baby Turtles in My Etsy Shop

Tiny Turtles

This is a selection of tiny toy turtles in handmade crochet.

Teal Toy Turtle: The head, feet and tiny tail are done in a teal acrylic yarn and the shell is a teal and lavender ombre. The eyes are embroidered, making this little turtle soft and safe all over.

Red Toy Turtle: The head, feet and tiny tail are done in a red acrylic yarn and the shell is a red & yellow ombre yarn called Sunshine Print. The eyes are embroidered, making this little turtle soft and safe all over.

These tiny turtles measures 5 inches from head to tail and about 3 inches from the tip of the head to the little turtle feet. Tiny turtles are handmade in the Amigurumi style of crochet using acrylic yarn and filled with soft polyfil.

Tiny Turtles make a darling baby gift or a fun plush toy for any age child.

They are available in my Etsy Store called Coastal Crochet Crafts.

Terrance the tortoise is crocheted in yellow, tan and sage green acrylic yarn and filled with soft new polyfil. He measures about 12 inches long and 11 inches wide measured across his body and his legs.

Toy tortoise has a tan body with a sage green shell. His head, legs and tail are done in yellow. His eyes are embroidered. He's soft and cuddly and safe for any age child with no removable parts.

Terrance the tortoise is a happy toy turtle waiting to be hugged by a child who loves turtles.

Good Night Little Turtle

These baby turtles and Terry tortoise have a favorite book they like to have read to them at bedtime.  It's called 'Good Night Little Turtle' and it is a fun rhyming story all about a little turtle who has to say goodnight to his animal friends, the sheep, bird, frog, dog, rabbit and lion, before he brushes his teeth and gets his own bedtime story read to him.  Then it's time to go to sleep.

My happy plush turtles at Coastal Crochet Crafts hope you enjoyed visiting them.

A Pair of Purple Plush Penguins in Crochet

Penguins are a group of aquatic flightless birds who live in the Southern Hemisphere.  They are typically tuxedo black and white in coloring, except for the Australian Little Blue Penguin.

Purple Penguins in Plush

When penguins are handmade by crocheting them in yarn, they become a plush toy which can be any color you can imagine.  Today we are going to look at a pair of penguins created in shades of purple who are currently living in the Etsy Shop of Coastal Crochet Crafts.
In addition to liking shades of purple, I just discovered that Ultra Violet is the Pantone Color of the Year for 2018, so these purple penguins are definitely up-to-date! :)

A Book about Penguins

This darling picture book for ages 4 to 8 years is a cute way to help children imagine what it would be like to be a penguin.  Told in rhymes, the story introduces scenes of penguin life from swimming underwater to tobogganing on ice.  If You Were a Penguin book is a delight for young children.

Playful Dinosaurs as Stuffed Animals and Toys

Playful toy dinosaurs are favorites of children. These ancient creatures seem to hold a fascination for kids and are enjoyed in many forms of plush animals and toys.

There are many different kinds of dinosaurs whose names I've always found hard to pronounce (or even remember), but most little boys can name them all.

Babysaurus - Dinosaur Baby Plush Toy

Babysaurus Plush Dinosaur
Babysaurus - the Plush Toy Baby Dinosaur
My favorite dinosaur is a plush toy version called a  babysaurus.  I created it in crochet with the thought in mind that it would make a darling new baby gift.

Hand-crocheted in soft pale yellow acrylic yarn, babysaurus measures 21 inches from his nose to the tip of his tail and stands 10" tall at his head. In addition to having a pretty yellow body, babysaurus has pastel green spots and the pads of his feet are green. The mouth is crocheted in light pink yarn and the eyes are blue crocheted circles. A pastel delight, this dandy dinosaur is available in my Etsy Shop Coastal Crochet Crafts

Babysaurus Comes with Baby Blocks

Set of Baby Blocks for Babysaurus
Baby dinosaur also comes with a set of four blocks which spell out B A B Y.  Created with plastic canvas and acrylic yarn, the blocks make a cute decor accent for a baby's room and can be played with when baby is a bit bigger.
